I've booked another workshop at Mazart Studio- Portrait of a Wolf with Vic Bearcroft. The workshop is in November and there's only one place remaining. Vic is obviously a popular tutor and I'm looking forward to learning more pastel techniques. Continue reading ...
Roy Lang Seascape Workshop - Mazart Studio
I've spent the last 3 days on an exceedingly enjoyable workshop at Mazart Studios - however as is usual for me I've not finished the painting.
Day 1 & day 2 I kept up. Then lost the plot a bit on day 3. I need to do much more work on the front rocks and the sea - in particular getting the lights and darks in. I have a good photo of Roy Langs painting so I can zoom in and study the details. I also took notes so I can refer to colours brushes and descriptions. Bit tired after 3 intensive ... Paul Pigram Pastel Demonstration
Last night I attended a demonstration at Bolton Art Circle by Paul Pigram - Pastel artist He showed us his approach to creating a beautiful landscape: A river meandering towards a distant lake with background mountains and a stunning sky. I learnt to push the pastels to create the texture in the paiting e.g. upwards where there are grasses and round to create the clouds. He blocked in first and then created the details ( using pastel pencils for the finer work). Finally constant adjustmen... Continue reading ...
Fascinating Pam Potter Demo
Watched a fascinating waterfall painting demo by Pam Pottter last night. She started with plenty of masking fluid - to give the white of the waterfall. The she added tube watercolours, straight from the tube, sprayed them with water. Used beaten eggs to create a tempra effect, chinese paper for texture. Also inks, charcoal, oil pastels, wax pastels texture & irridescent mediums and more that I can't now remember. The end result was fabulos. Mixed media at its best. Here's a link to the f... Volunteering in the Arts
I attended a workshop yesterday about volunteering in the arts. Met some interesting people and picked up a few hints and tips. If you're involved with any arty organisation who utilises volunteers you may find the voluntary art group has lots of useful information. Continue reading ...
Acrylics demo
Watched a very interesting demonstration by the talented Anne Fryers last night. She showed us her way with acrylics. Painting a mixed background from a chosen limited pallett and then creating the detail from what appears in the mix. Quite fascinating and another technique for me to try some time in the future. Here's a link to some of her work. Continue reading ...
Gouache lesson
When cleaning ones pallett and red gouache gets splattered on the kitchen tiles - clean up immediately. Do not leave for a few days. The gouache will still wipe clean from the tiles, the grout however is a different story. Continue reading ...
Alcatraz Dusk - dreadful
I continued on my experimental oil pastel of Alcatraz at dusk by adding more pastel.
These pastels are so difficult to get any amount of blending. I think this looks like I did it with childs wax crayons. My mistake was to add the yellow - the photo showed just a hint so I went for it, however the limited colours I have in oil pastels only have a bright yellow .
After this I decided to add some oil medium thinking it may help blend the colours. Nope it started to remove the pastel whi... Continue reading ...

Latest experience - Art Critic & Coach
During todays stint in the Gallery a lady called in and asked for me by name. She then asked me to look at her artwork and tell her what I thought. GULP!!!
Ok, so I looked, pointed out the good bits, made some suggestions on how to improve and we decided to photograph what we agreed was her best work so the gallery manager can decide on potential to exhibit.
I think I was positive and helpful, but would have done things a bit differently if I'd been more prepared. Continue reading ...
SAA "It's all about Art" event
Went to the SAA "It's all about Art" event yesterday and participated in 4 x 1 hour workshops. My friend and I called it "Speed Painting" - please keep in view that I'm the slowest painter I know.
Anyway here's the results
A watercolour lake scene - For me this would normally be the start of a more detailed painting. I did this workshop because my friend wanted to. I may well go back to this and do some more work.

A pastel winter landscape - I enjoyed this but got the tracks wrong... ? Continue reading ...

Roses
Here's the result of a class I attended yesterday at Mazart Studio. We had fun and produced some prettty good work. I have to report that my top left rose has recovered it's missing top petals since the picture was taken. Would have helped if I'd painted the roses in the order as instructed. Continue reading ...
Person Study

This weeks watercolour class subject was people. I've never drawn or painted a person before so it was a challenge. I got the torso wrong - too long. I also had fun in making the details up as the picture I was working from was a black shape against the light sky with no details of the person visible. Point of going to class is to learn and I'd say I'm learning.

Class Project finished
I did my homework yesterday and got the painting we started in class finished. Quite like this - just wish I could take more credit for the composition and the tonal values. All good practice and as I've visited Scotland many times I must have a photo I can work from to create a painting I can call my own as I really like how the colours worked out on this. Continue reading ...
Creative Classses re-commenced
This week I've re-commenced at creative watercolour classes. We've started by working on a harbour scene with multiple perspectives, reflections and huge contrasts in sunlight / shadows. We were given a black white copy of a painting to work from and have to put in all the colours ourselves. It looked fairly simple until I started painting - should have realised that we weren't going to be given something simple to do - the point of going to class is to learn..........................watch...
